The following is a list of certificate programs that qualify for F1 student visa status.  To be able to get an I-20, an F1 student visa, and maintain student visa status, you must enroll for full-time study in one of the programs below. Most permit entry in any quarter. Exceptions are indicated.

Earn a English Proficiency Test Waiver through the UCLA Extension English Language Programs

The American Language Center (ALC) at UCLA Extension provides English language programs for students who do not meet TOEFL/IELTS requirements for certificate programs. Students completing advanced level 107 or above in the Academic Intensive English Program with an overall grade of A- are eligible to enter most UCLA Extension Certificate Programs without taking the TOEFL or IELTS. However, these students are still required to take ESL 433C.

This TOEFL/IELTS waiver for ALC student does not apply to the following Certificate Programs:

  • Human Resources Management
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Paralegal Studies
  • Post-Baccalaureate Program in Classics

Student who are admitted with the minimum score but have a TOEFL iBT score of less than 100 or an IELTS overall band score of less than 7.0 are required to take supplemental English courses along with the certificate program courses. Refer to the details in “Supplemental English Courses” for more information.  Please note that this will extend the duration of your program.If you are requesting a waiver of the TOEFL or IELTS score, please submit the completed TOEFL/IELTS waiver form and supporting evidence, if applicable.

Chart Abbreviations & Terms:

Application Fee – The certificate application fee is non-refundable. $2,000USD International Student fee and other miscellaneous fees (e.g. health insurance, express mailing) are not included.
Est. Total Cost – This estimate of the entire program costs including course fees, books, and materials; this amount does not include international student fees.
Est. Duration – This is the minimum duration of the program based on full-time (12 units) enrollment. Additional time is provided on your I-20 in case you need to take English courses, a vacation quarter when eligible, or additional electives in your program.
Internship – This indicates whether or not the program includes an internship course.  Internship course must be available for enrollment to participate in unpaid internships or Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
Entry Quarters – Most programs allow entry at any quarter; any exceptions are noted.
